The BRICS group of nations, in an extraordinary joint meeting, has called for an “immediate,” “durable,” and “sustained” humanitarian truce in Gaza amid deep concern over the dire humanitarian situation. The meeting focused on the West Asia conflict, addressing the escalating violence since October 7, 2023.

The chair’s summary emphasized the need for a cessation of hostilities and expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel. BRICS nations condemned acts of violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians, including war crimes, and called for the protection of civilians in line with international humanitarian and human rights law.

The chair’s summary emphasized the importance of a cease-fire and expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the Occupied Palestinian Territory (including East Jerusalem), and Israel. BRICS nations condemned violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians, including war crimes, and called for civilian protection in accordance with international humanitarian and human rights law.

The BRICS nations reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful dispute resolution through dialogue, pledging their support for efforts toward a peaceful resolution. They urged the protection of civilians, the provision of humanitarian aid, and adherence to international law and the UN Charter. The leaders welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2712 and reaffirmed the UN Security Council’s primary role in ensuring international peace and security.

Additionally, the leaders acknowledged the roles of regional organizations and called for preventing further escalation of violence, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint. Emphasizing a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, BRICS leaders called for international support for direct negotiations based on relevant UN resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative, and a two-state solution leading to a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine.
