After the strict measures by the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT), farmers are preparing to mobilize against decisions made by the Punjab-Haryana government regarding stubble burning.
Farmers in Punjab and Haryana have announced plans to surround DC offices, and they declare that they won’t pay fines for burning stubble, intending to reverse this order.
In response to the strict actions taken in Punjab, around 400 farmers have faced FIRs, and many are being fined. In Amritsar alone, approximately 6.50 lakh farmers have received fines. Farmer organizations are now uniting against this, announcing a plan to surround all the DC offices in Punjab and Haryana on Monday, November 20.
These farmer groups urge fellow farmers not to pay fines for stubble burning, demanding a refund for all imposed fines. Additionally, efforts are underway to revoke orders like placing farmers in the red line and cancelling passports.
If the FIRs against the farmers are not cancelled, they threaten to escalate their protests. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher alleges that a misleading narrative is being presented to the public, claiming that pollution in Delhi is primarily caused by farmers burning stubble.
However, government figures indicate that industry contributes 51 percent to the rise in pollution, raising questions about why farmers are being targeted. Following notices to the DCs of 11 districts, stubble burning cases in the state decreased by nearly 50 percent. Recently, 1150 cases were reported, but on Saturday, this number fell to 637.
