The orders issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court will weigh heavily on the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. On an average, 4 thousand dog bite cases are reported every year in Chandigarh. In such a situation, if the Municipal Corporation has to pay compensation, it will amount to around Rs 4 crore. The Municipal Corporation is already facing financial crisis. In such a situation, the financial crisis will increase further after the burden of compensation increases.
Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered regarding dog bites that the local administration will be held responsible and a compensation of Rs 10,000 will be given to the victim for each tooth mark. Whereas for 0.2 cm deep wound, a compensation of Rs 20 thousand will be given. After this order, the concerns of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh have increased.
It has been said in the order of the High Court that all the DCs will make a policy for their respective districts and implement it. Even if DC prepares a plan for dog bites in Chandigarh, the responsibility of implementing it and giving compensation will be that of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh. Municipal Corporation Chandigarh itself looks after the work of dealing with stray dogs and their sterilization in the city.
Recently, on October 17, a policy for pet dogs and street dogs was brought in the meeting of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. But the councilors did not agree on that. Therefore it was sent for some modifications. This policy can be implemented in Chandigarh in the next meeting of the corporation.
