PM Modi Slams Nitish Kumar’s Birth Control Remarks as ‘Derogatory’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a strong attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his derogatory remarks against women in relation to population control and said crass words were uttered in the state assembly and there was “no shame”.

PM Modi condemned the derogatory words uttered in the assembly and expressed his concern over the opposition’s lack of response to the insult to mothers and sisters present during the session. He questioned the leaders of the opposition alliance, collectively known as the INDI alliance, asking if they could genuinely work for the welfare and respect of women.

PM Modi further stated that such remarks not only harm the reputation of individuals but also tarnish the country’s image. He emphasized his commitment to upholding the honour and respect of women, stating that he would continue to work toward that goal.

The controversy began when Nitish Kumar used derogatory language in the Bihar Assembly to explain the role of education and women in population control. His remarks triggered outrage, leading to an apology from the Bihar CM, who stated that he was taking back his words.

Nitish Kumar’s comments received widespread condemnation, including from the BJP and the National Commission for Women (NCW). Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, criticized the Bihar Chief Minister’s statements and called for an apology, suggesting that Nitish Kumar had lost his “mental stability.”

In defense of Nitish Kumar, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav explained that the remarks were taken out of context and clarified that the Chief Minister was discussing sex education and practical measures to address population growth.
