Netherlands stuns South Africa in thrilling upset at ICC World Cup 2023

In an unexpected twist at the ICC World Cup 2023, the Netherlands cricket team pulled off a sensational upset by defeating South Africa by 38 runs in the 15th match of the tournament. The South African captain, Temba Bavuma, won the toss and opted to field first, setting the stage for a rain-interrupted showdown. The Netherlands, under the leadership of Scott Edwards, managed to post a competitive total of 245 runs while losing 8 wickets in 43 overs.
Captain Scott Edwards played a pivotal role with an unbeaten innings, accumulating 78 runs off 69 balls, guiding his team to a respectable total. Aryan Dutt, with an unbeaten 23 runs from just 9 balls, provided crucial support, bolstering the Netherlands’ score.
The South African bowlers displayed their skills, with Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi each claiming two wickets, while Keshav Maharaj secured one wicket. Despite an early wicket falling at 36 runs, South Africa’s innings took a downward turn, losing four wickets with just 44 runs on the board. David Miller, the most experienced batsman in the South African lineup, scored 43 runs from 52 balls but couldn’t guide his team to victory. Keshav Maharaj also put up a valiant effort, contributing 40 runs from 37 balls. This marked the second major upset in the tournament, with the Netherlands repeating their feat from the 2022 T20 World Cup when they eliminated South Africa.
In an exclusive interview on the Dafa News Cricket Show, Zimbabwe’s national player and coach, Tasmin Granger, shared intriguing statistics. Granger revealed that fast bowler Kagiso Rabada achieved a milestone by claiming 150 wickets in ODI cricket during this match, reaching this achievement in just 95 matches with an impressive economy rate of 5.07. His standout performance included taking 6 wickets for a mere 16 runs. Rabada’s prowess transcends home and foreign pitches, with 45 ODI matches played at home resulting in 69 wickets and 33 matches on foreign soil yielding 61 wickets. He also contributed 20 wickets from 17 ODI matches at neutral venues.
Moreover, Rabada became the ninth South African bowler to reach the 150-wicket mark in ODIs. Shaun Pollock holds the record for the most wickets taken by a South African in ODI cricket, amassing an impressive tally of 387 wickets. Under Bavuma’s captaincy, South Africa has showcased strong performances in the World Cup, with Rabada’s consistency proving vital to their campaign. The Netherlands not only created history but also achieved two significant milestones in this match. Firstly, they secured their first-ever victory over South Africa in ODI history. Out of the eight matches played between these two teams, one ended inconclusively, while South Africa triumphed in six. The first ODI encounter between the nations occurred in 1996.
Secondly, the Netherlands clinched their third win in the ODI World Cup, marking their return to victory in the tournament after 16 years. Their previous victory dates back to 2007 when they outplayed Scotland. Additionally, they had triumphed over Namibia in 2003.
This remarkable win for the Netherlands has turned the spotlight on them as they continue to be a formidable force in international cricket. Their victory over South Africa is a testament to the unpredictability and excitement that the ICC World Cup 2023 has brought to the cricketing world.
