Internet ban in Manipur to be lifted today, claims CM Biren Singh

On Saturday, Manipur’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh declared the resumption of mobile internet services for the public starting today. This decision comes after months of internet shutdown following ethnic violence in the state.

Addressing a press conference in the state capital, Singh said, “From today onwards, internet services will be opened for the public in Manipur”.

In July, the Manipur government declared that broadband services in the state would be conditionally reinstated, but mobile internet services would continue to be suspended due to ongoing violence.

However, a recent statement from the chief minister’s office on Friday urged the residents of Manipur to surrender any illegal weapons they possessed within a 15-day period. Failure to do so would result in extensive search operations conducted by security forces.

The statement also mentioned that the state government was open to a lenient approach for individuals voluntarily turning in their illegal weapons within this specified 15-day timeframe.
