According to Halton Regional Police Constable Ryan Anderson, Canadian authorities are seeking to capture five million bees that were released after a vehicle carrying several boxes of hives collapsed onto a roadway in Ontario, Canada.
According to Anderson, Halton Regional Police received a complaint just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday after the straps linked to the boxes of beehives fell free and caused a spill, spilling millions of bees onto the Burlington street.
Burlington is located south of Toronto. According to its website, the city is located on the beaches of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Niagara Falls.
Anderson stated that when the police issued a social media warning to homeowners and motorists to avoid the area, about six or seven local beekeepers volunteered to assist in relocating the bees.
“Within a couple hours, the majority of the bees were safely back in their hives in their crates, and safely loaded back on the trailer,” Anderson told CNN.
One of the volunteers who assisted in the capturing of some of the five million bees was a local Canadian beekeeper. Michael Barber, owner of Tri-City Bee Rescue in neighboring Guelph, said he received a call from the police about 7 a.m. on Wednesday to assist with the bee rescue.
Barber told CNN by phone that the honeybees were being relocated after being used for pollination locally. Barber stated that beekeepers typically work at this time of year to return bees to their winter home yard.
