On the 77th Independence Day, the Indian Army commemorated the occasion by dedicating a bridge to the locals of Danna, the last village on the Line of Control in the Machhal Sector across Machhal Nala in Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement was made by the Public Relations Officer of Defence, Srinagar. Named the “Bhagat Bridge” after the late Major Bhagat Singh, Veer Chakra awardee, who made the ultimate sacrifice defending this sector during the 1965 war, the 115-foot-long bridge stands as a testament to his valour.
Danna Village, also known as Bhagat Village in honour of the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, witnessed a significant event as the bridge’s official opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The esteemed task of cutting the ribbon was carried out by Sep Mian Gul Khan, a proud ninety-year-old veteran of the 1971 war, who resides in the area. The ceremony took place in the presence of Indian Army personnel and other distinguished local dignitaries.
The bridge was erected through the diligent efforts of Indian Army engineers, who worked tirelessly for two months despite continuous rainfall and challenging conditions. Their dedication aimed to offer relief to the local residents who have long faced challenges due to the absence of passable roads and a bridge across Machhal Nala.
