Due to escalating violence following a recent coup in Niger, the Indian government on Friday urged its citizens in Niger to evacuate urgently.
About 250 Indians currently reside in Niger, which has experienced widespread unrest and violence since last month’s political upheaval, official sources confirmed. The Ministry of External Affairs, in a public advisory, also suggested those contemplating a visit to Niger postpone their travels until the situation stabilizes. Arindam Bagchi, the External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, briefed the media about the rising concerns in Niger. “Considering the current state, we advise Indian nationals, unless their stay is critical, to depart from Niger at the earliest,” remarked Bagchi.
He further cautioned, “Given that the airspace is presently shut, those choosing land routes for departure must exercise maximum caution to ensure their safety.” He emphasized the importance of Indians registering with the Indian Embassy in Niamey and mentioned the emergency contact available at the Embassy (+ 227 9975 9975) for any assistance.
Many European nations have already initiated the evacuation of their citizens from the African nation.
The situation in Niger deteriorated after Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani led a coup on July 26, toppling President Mohamed Bazoum and subsequently proclaiming himself as the leader of the ‘National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland’.
