With 67k new cases, India Covid caseload climbs to 73L

India’s Covid-19 tally of cases climbed to 73.07 lakh with 67,708 new cases in a day, while 63,83,441 people have recuperated so far pushing the national recovery rate to 87.35% on Thursday, according to the Union Health Ministry.

 The total coronavirus cases mounted to 73,07,097, and the death toll climbed to 1,11,266 with the novel coronavirus virus claiming 680 lives in 24 hours in the country. The Covid-19 case fatality rate has further declined to 1.52%. There are 812390 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country which comprises 11.11% of the total caseload.

 According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 9,12,26,305 samples have been tested up to 14 October with 11,36,183 samples being tested on Wednesday. Calling for continued vigilance and a high state of preparedness against the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday directed health authorities to scale up Covid-19 testing and “Sero-surveys”. He said, “the facility to get tested regularly and speedily at a low cost must be available to all at the earliest.” Chairing a review meeting of the research and vaccine deployment ecosystem against the Covid-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister also underscored the need for continuous and rigorous scientific testing and validation of traditional medical treatments.

 Delhi has once again begun to report over 3,000 new cases in a day. The Delhi numbers had remained below 3,000 for twelve days but crossed that figure on Tuesday and Wednesday. But it is still too early to say whether the declining trend in Delhi has been reversed.

 A total of 1,205 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in Haryana on Wednesday, 1,324 discharges, and 13 deaths took the state’s death toll to 1,614. Of the latest coronavirus fatalities reported from the state, four deaths were in Hisar, three in Panchkula, two each in Faridabad and Rohtak and one death each in Gurugram and Bhiwani, according to the state Health department’s daily bulletin. 

Maharashtra reported 10,226 new Covid-19 cases, meanwhile, the tally raised to 15,64,615, the toll went up to 41,196 as 337 people died. With the addition of 1,771 fresh cases of Covid-19, the tally in Maharashtra’s Thane district reached 1,95,711 on Thursday. Apart from the latest infections reported on Wednesday, the district also recorded 33 more deaths that raised the toll to 4,947. Dharavi reported 15 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, taking the tally in the densely populated slum colony of Mumbai to 3,374. Out of the total cases, 2,924 patients have so far recovered.

 Madhya Pradesh on Thursday reported 1,308 fresh coronavirus positive cases, which pushed its caseload to 1,56,584, while 24 fatalities took the toll to 2,710. A total of 1,559 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s overall recovery count to 1,39,717.

 Karnataka recorded 8,477 fresh cases of coronavirus and 85 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 7.43 lakh and the toll to 10,283, on Thursday. The day also saw 8,841 patients getting discharged after recovery. 

Kerala’s infection count on Thursday mounted to 3,15,929 with the addition of 7,789 fresh Covid-19 cases, including 128 health workers, while 2.22 lakh people have so far recovered from the disease. “The toll climbed to 1,089 with 23 more fatalities”, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
