As India commemorates the 40th anniversary of its World Cup victory, stars such as Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman took to social media to honor the 1983 World Cup legends for motivating many to play for India someday.

Today, India commemorates the 40th anniversary of its first World Cup victory, led by famous all-rounder Kapil Dev.

In a tweet, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag stated, “The catch that changed Indian Cricket forever.” Kapil Paaji, with the Viv Richards catch, and his team of brilliant contributors, as well as a fervent dream, led India to World Cup success. What a wonderful day!”

“25th June, 1983 – 40 years since that historic day when Kapil Paaji and his boys won India the World Cup, inspiring an entire generation of youth to take up cricket and playing an important role in shaping cricket in India.” Former India batsman and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman tweeted, “#WorldCup.”

Yuvraj Singh, a former Indian batter, tweeted, “They did it first! A group of legends who defied the odds with their bravery and resolve. Congratulations on #40Years to that special day, and thank you for an extraordinary journey that has enabled countless dreams to come true.”

The Indian Board of Control for Cricket also recognised the historic day, tweeting, #OnThisDay in 1983. A momentous day and a watershed moment in Indian cricket as #TeamIndia, headed by @therealkapildev, won the World Cup.”
