Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu tested Covid positive after going through a routine coronavirus test on Tuesday. According to a tweet from his official handle, he is asymptomatic, in good health and has gone in home quarantine. Meanwhile, his wife Usha Naidu tested negative after which she has self-isolated herself.

  Amid this, daily Covid-19 cases in India dropped below 75,000 and less than 1,000 deaths were reported in a day after nearly a month. Total recoveries crossed the 51 lakh-mark, improving the national recovery rate to over 83 percent and outnumbering the active cases by more than 41.5 lakh. With 70,589 new patients, the coronavirus cases in India crossed the 61-lakh mark and the death count climbed to 96,318 with 776 more fatalities.

 The national capital reported 48 Covid-19 fatalities, highest in over 70 days, pushing the death toll to 5,320, while the infection tally rose to over 2.76 lakh with 3,227 more people contracting the viral disease. This is the highest number of deaths reported in a day since July 16, when Delhi recorded 58 fatalities.

  Worst affected state Maharashtra›s Covid-19 tally rose to 13,66,129 with addition of 14,976 new cases. 

As many as 430 more patients succumbed to the infection, taking the fatality count in the state to 36,181. Also, 19,212 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, raising the tally of recovered people to 10,69,159. The state now has 2,60,363 active cases. Mumbai city reported 1,713 positive cases in the last 24 hours which pushed its overall count to 2,02,614, while its death count rose to 8,883 after 49 more patients died due to the disease. 

Uttar Pradesh reported 63 deaths due to Covid-19 in the last twenty-four hours, pushing the death toll to 5,715, while 4,069 fresh cases took the tally to 3,84,856. The number of active Covid-19 cases in the state stands at 52,160.  In Haryana 25 more people died in the last 24 hours as 1,562 fresh cases took the state›s infection tally to 1,26,974. So far, the disease has claimed 1,356 lives in the state. Rajasthan reported 15 more Covid-19 fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the number to 1,471, while 2,148 new cases pushed the infection tally in the state to 1,33,119. The number of Covid-19 patients undergoing treatment now stands at 20,376. Meanwhile, 10,254 people have been discharged after recovering from the disease till now.

 Gujarat›s Covid-19 caseload mounted to 136,004 with addition of 1,381 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. With 11 more people succumbing to the infection, the cumulative toll in the state went up to 3,442. Meanwhile, 1,383 people were discharged after treatment in the last 24 hours, taking the total count of recoveries to 1,15,859. 

Southern state of Kerala registered a spike of 7,354 fresh infections in new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the state caseload to 1,86,276. The death toll climbed to 719 with 22 fatalities. Tamil Nadu reported 5,546 new Covid-19 cases, 5,501 recoveries and 70 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking total positive cases to 5,91,943, including 5,36,209 recoveries, 9,453 deaths and 46,281 active cases. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has further extended the lockdown until October 31 with some more relaxations.
