Imran Khan arrested, tough task ahead for cricketer turned politician

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was apprehended outside the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday.

It would be a tough ask for the cricketer turned politician. This man had saved the Pakistani team with his bowling and batting on numerous occasions, but the political pitch is entirely different from the cricket ground. What would be his next line of action to trounce his political opponents?

Imran Khan is considered the most successful captain of the Pakistani cricket team. His international cricket journey got underway in 1971 against England, and since then he  never looked back despite seeing several ups and downs in his career.

Once, he was declared the 3rd fastest bowler in the world at Perth, ahead of greats like Dennis Lillee and Andy Roberts.

As a player, he helped his team win many important matches. He became captain of Pakistan in 1982, and under his captaincy, the mindset of the Pakistani cricketers totally changed. He brought a positive attitude to the team.

His most memorable moment came on 25 March 1992, when Pakistan defeated England in the World Cup final and lifted the coveted trophy. He became a national hero. However, a lot of people wanted him to get into politics.

He wished to construct a cancer hospital in his mother’s name, which made him the cynosure of all eyes.

Gradually, he jumped into politics, and people started accepting him with both hands. Imran launched a new party named Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in 1996. But in the following year’s national elections, Imran’s party won less than 1 percent of the vote and failed to win any seats. But he did not lose his heart and continued his political journey.

Gradually, he became a mature politician, and in the 2018 elections, Khan raised the issue of corruption and got full support. His party, PTI, won plenty of seats, and he formed a government with the help of other parties.

Khan promised to remove corruption, but he failed to do so. Despite his best efforts, he was not free from controversy; his personal life was erratic, and people raised questions about it. As a politician, Khan failed to do anything for his countrymen.

The opposition started coming out on one platform to oust him. He could not complete his term due to political upheaval in Pakistan. He became the first Prime Minister in Pakistan’s history to be ousted in a vote of no confidence in 2022.

Since then, he has been trying to woo the people to get more and more support to grab power again. From here, what would his political future be? It is a million-dollar question.
