Covid Concern: US considers new Covid prevention measures for arrivals from China

Amidst the growing Covid concerns, the United States government may impose the new Covid-19 measures on people coming from China, a US official said.

“There are mounting concerns in the international community on the ongoing COVID-19 surges in China and the lack of transparent data, including viral genomic sequence data, being reported from the PRC,” the officials said. This move came after Japan, India and Malaysia announced new measures on passengers comig from China in the last 24 hours, concerning the increasing Covid cases.

In addition, Japan mandated COVID-19 testing for visitors from China beginning December 30 due to an increase in the number of verified cases there, according to a report from the Kyodo news agency on Tuesday.

Travelers from the Chinese mainland and those who have recently visited are subject to the measure. Upon arriving in Japan, they must take the COVID-19 exam. Those who test positive will be placed in a seven-day quarantine. According to the Kyodo news agency, the decision was made public on Tuesday by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

China had a record rise in regional COVID-19 outbreaks in November. The authorities implemented partial lockdowns in some communities and made their residents go through mandatory evacuations as a result of the severity of the epidemiological situation.

Restrictive measures were specifically tightened beginning on November 24 in a number of major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.

In light of this, there were widespread protests in a number of Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, and others. The rioters asked that lockdowns be immediately lifted, that routine PCR testing be stopped, and that COVID-19 restrictions be relaxed.

According to information released on Friday, the COVID-19 outbreak in China, which is currently the greatest in the world, may have affected as many as 37 million individuals in a single day last week.

It was observed that the coronavirus was expected to have infected up to 248 million people, or nearly 18% of the population, in the first 20 days of December.
