Canada has introduced a new policy for international students in the midst of labour shortages and a high unemployment rate. Sean Fraser, Canada’s immigration minister, unveiled a new temporary measure targeted at easing the country’s severe labour shortages as Statistics Canada reported that the country’s jobless rate dropped to 5.2% in September.

What recent initiative might be beneficial to Indian students studying in Canada?

Over 5,000 international students studying in Canada already have the opportunity to work extra hours thanks to the new policy. International students who have a work authorization for off-campus employment on their study visa are now permitted to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus, even when classes are in session. Foreign nationals who have already submitted their study permit application may also use the measure.

Is the action only temporary?

Yes, the measure is only temporary. According to the immigration minister, the new rule will be in effect from November 15, 2022, through December 31, 2023. Its purpose is to address Canada’s labour shortages.

What are the laws in effect right now?

International students who apply to study in Canada are currently permitted to work off-campus for up to 20 hours each job throughout their studies. Only during designated school breaks, such as the summer or winter holidays, is this constraint waived.
