Jamie, an 8-year-old award-winning photographer from the UK, has captivated social media by spotting and photographing a rare pink grasshopper. In an Instagram video, Jamie shared her excitement, explaining that only 1% of people might encounter this rare phenomenon in their lifetime. The pink hue of the grasshopper is caused by a genetic mutation leading to an overproduction of pink pigment and a lack of black.
“Wow, I just found a pink grasshopper! There’s only a 1% chance of seeing one in your lifetime, so I’m really lucky. The reason they’re pink is due to a genetic mutation that produces too much pink pigment and not enough black,” Jamie explains in the video.
The video caption reads, “A rare find by Jamie – Eagle Eyed Girl: A Pink Grasshopper! The pink is due to a genetic mutation.”
Jamie’s discovery has charmed social media users, with many praising her talent and love for nature. One user commented, “This is what kids on social media should be like—curious and inspired by the world around them. I love it.” Another added, “Her excitement makes me so happy!” A third wrote, “She belongs on National Geographic. Congratulations and thank you for sharing this rare beauty.”
Earlier this year, a 9-year-old girl from Benton, Arkansas, also spotted a pink grasshopper while walking to her family’s barn. Madeline Landecker named the grasshopper ‘Millie’ and brought it to school, thrilling her classmates with the rare find. Madeline, who dreams of becoming a veterinarian, already cares for nine chickens, two dogs, two cats, and a rabbit.
