If a new survey is to be believed, about 75.8% people in India endorse Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the pandemic even as the total Covid-19 numbers in the country cross the 47-lakh mark on Sunday.

As per the latest IANS C Voter Covid-19 Tracker, three-fourths’ of the people have said the Modi government has handled the situation well and the Trust-inGovernment index remains strong. At least 75.8 per cent agree with the handling by the Modi government while 20.5 per cent disagree.

However, the approval ratings are not as high in the earlier months of the pandemic and the economic hardship is playing out longer. This number is off the highs of 80 and 90 per cent support seen in the months of April, May and June.

To a question on “I am afraid that either myself or someone in my family may actually catch the coronavirus”, representing the Index of Panic, 49.8 per cent agree while 46.1 per cent disagree, leaving a very slim majority for the agree camp at 3.7 per cent. This means that more people are afraid of catching the virus but with a very slim majority.

This number is now much lower than previous months indicating that people are less in panic mode. The sample size of the latest tracker is 4,853.

Meanwhile, India’s coronavirus tally surged past the 47-lakh mark with 94,372 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours. The current death count due to Covid-19 in the country rose to 78,586 after 1,172 deaths due to Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Yet, India’s recovery rate continues to rise and now stands at 77.9 percent.

Maharashtra’s Covid-19 tally rose to 10,60,308 after 22,543 fresh cases being reported in last twentyfour hours. The number of deaths in the state rose to 29,531 with 416 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. So far, 7,40,061 persons have been discharged, while there are 2,90,344 cases in the state.

The national capital reported 4,235 new Covid-19 cases and 29 deaths in last 24 hours. Delhi also recorded 3403 recoveries from different hospitals. The total cases in the national capital rise to 2,18,304, including 4,744 deaths and 1,84,748 patients recovered/discharged/migrated. Active cases stand at 28,812.

Gujarat recorded 1,326 coronavirus positive cases in last twenty-four hours which took the state’s over all tally to 1,13,662. With 15 deaths, the fatality count reached 3,213. A total of 1,205 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, taking the number of recovered cases in the state to 94,010.

Uttar Pradesh recorded 6,239 new Covid-19 cases, 5,958 recoveries and 80 deaths in the last 24 hrs. Total number of cases in the state stands at 3,12,036 till date, including 68,122 active cases, 2,39,485 recoveries and 4,429 deaths so far.

Himachal Pradesh recorded 123 new Covid-19 cases in last twenty-four hours, taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 9,352. The tally includes 3,268 active cases, 5,992 recovered cases and 75 deaths.

Haryana reported 2,526 Covid-19 cases and 19 deaths in last twenty-four hours. The state’s caseload has reached 93,641 and the death toll mounted to 975. Looking at the tally of southern states, Tamil Nadu reported 5,693 new coronavirus cases and 74 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state also recorded 5,717 discharged cases. Of the total new cases, 994 cases were from Chennai alone.

Karnataka saw its biggest single day spike of 9,894 new Covid-19 cases and 104 deaths in the last 24 hours. There are 4,59,445 cases in the State now, including 3,52,958 discharges and 99,203 active cases. Andhra Pradesh recorded as many as 9,536 new Covid-19 cases, 66 deaths in the past 24 hours. The state’s coronavirus count now stands at 5,67,123 cases. There are 95,072 active cases in the state while 4,912 people have died of the virus.
