As most of the countries in the world have elections scheduled, a political fervor continues to grip or gripped countries like France, USA, India, France and UK.

But, as election approaches, disinformation continues to prevail in social media platforms, and its impact is so big, that it can either make or break a person.

For example, this 2024 Indian election, users were bombarded with deepfake videos be it PM Modi grooving on a Bollywood song with a trendy jacket, Mamata Bannerjee dancing in her saree-outfit video with parts of her speech being used as background and the deepfake video of home minister Amit Shah video being circulated online.

All in all, Indian social media was filled with AI generated and deepfake videos of politicians.

In order to save yourself from this fake news or prevent disinformation from spreading among gullible people.

Here are 7 ways Through which you can identify whether a Video is real or a deepfake.

1. Study The Area Around the Mouth or Chin

In order to identify deepfakes, first analyze the area around the mouth or chin, as deepfake still hasn’t mastered face rendering accurately. As a result, the faces usually have less wrinkles, lesser details and sometimes, it even displays blurry or smudged appearance.

If still finding it tough to identify, bad or poor synchronization between person’s voice and mouth movements can be a huge hint, that this video is deepfake.

For example, the viral video of Rashmika Mandana in an elevator wearing black spaghetti top looked extremely genuine to people and it even managed to garner atleast 2.4 million views on X. But upon examination of the face side, this video was later identified as Deepfake.

2. Identify Jerkiness In Video

Meanwhile, some of the manipulated videos usually tend to be poorly edited. With presence of Jerkiness in body movement. Users can easily tell that the concerned video is a deefake.

3. Presence of Discontinuation In The Video

Another notable sign of deepfake video is presence of inconsistency across video clip. for example, the fake video of US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller went viral on social media, where he was seen justifying ukranian military strikes on Russia’s Belgorod.

Later, due to inconsistency it was found to be fake.

4. Weird Elements of Speech

The presence of odd elements of speech might help in identifying the video as deepfake. For example, the video of Keir Starmer selling an investment scheme was debunked as deepfake due to its peculiar speech pattern.

The modern songs sung by veteran singers of bollywood usually reflects weird elements of speech.

5. Connection Between Face & Body

Inconsistent facial and body proportions, combined with mismatched skin tones, may also indicate, that a video is deepfake. For example, the video of ukranian president Volodymyr Zelensky, where he was asking citizens to surrender before Russian army was found to be fake, when people noticed, that the head was disproportionately bigger compared to the body.

6. Presence of Extra Fingers, Hands & Limbs

What’s notable is, that these AI generated videos do not accurately render human body. Which usually results in the presence of extra fingers or distorted limbs.

7. Distorted Numbers & Letters

And lastly, the AI generated videos also struggle with numbers & Letters. For example, in Donald Trump’s fake mugshot video, it displayed nonsensical numbers & letters rather than clear height chart. Thus, identifying this video as deepfake.
