The Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken a former Deputy Superintendent and around 40 others into custody in connection with a case linked to providing assistance to Rohingyas for their settlement in the Jammu region. IG Jammu Zone Police, Anand Jain, has confirmed the detention of nearly 40 individuals following raids conducted across the Jammu region.
A senior official from Jammu Police informed The Daily Guardian that a retired Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police has been detained for his alleged role in settling Rohingyas. “The retired DySP in Jammu has provided his land to Rohingyas for settlement, leading to his detention by Jammu Police in yesterday’s afternoon raids. However, he has been released on a ‘Surety Bond’ after ensuring full cooperation in the case,” the official added.
J&K Police has filed FIRs against Rohingyas and their supporters, registering cases under sections 420, 120-B, 467, 468, 471 of the IPC and 14 (C) of the Foreigners Act 1946. All FIRs were lodged on suo-moto cognizance by Jammu Police. Describing the case as special, being the first of its kind in a specific area and the ninth of its nature, the police highlighted the gravity of the situation.
Jammu Police Chief Anand Jain emphasized that the police would also investigate possible terror links of the Rohingyas who were arrested during the raids. Illegal acquisition of Aadhar cards, bank documents, revenue records, and other pertinent documents were seized by Jammu Zone Police in raids across 50 locations. Over 18 Rohingyas, along with their supporters, were arrested from Kishtwar, Poonch, and Rajouri districts of Jammu.
In an official statement, Jammu Police declared that thorough investigations and intelligence reports have confirmed the involvement of locals in facilitating the illegal settlement of Rohingyas, posing potential threats to the security and socio-economic fabric of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The police have taken action against facilitators providing shelter to Rohingyas in Jammu, Kishtwar, Doda, Poonch, and Rajouri districts, the statement added.
