A tragic stampede at a school fair in Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria, has resulted in the deaths of 35 children and left six others critically injured, police reported on Thursday.
The incident happened yesterday at the Basorun Islamic High School, at a fair organized by the Wings Foundation and Agidigbo FM radio. Eight people have been apprehended, including the lead organizer of the event. The Oyo State Police Command’s Homicide Section is investigating the occurrence.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde took to social media where he expressed his condolences about the tragedy and sent thoughts to the affected families of the tragedy. “We stand with the families of the loved ones affected as our hearts continue to weep,” said Governor Makinde. “We indeed sympathize with the grieved parents whose joy came to an untimely end due to these unnecessary deaths.”
The local community has been shaken by the tragedy as families try to cope with the devastating loss of their loved ones. The authorities have promised to bring perpetrators to book as they continue with the investigations into the events that led to the stampede.
