A fire broke out in the Acme Shopping Mall at Malad (West) in Mumbai on Wednesday evening, leading to the successful rescue of at least 22 individuals. This marks the second fire incident in a shopping mall within the week, following a blaze at south Mumbai’s Phoenix Mall on December 25, where 30 two-wheelers were consumed by the fire.
The incident in Malad was reported around 7 pm, prompting the immediate deployment of four fire engines and five jumbo tankers. According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), no injuries were reported in this latest incident. Approximately 30 individuals were rescued by the MFB using staircases and refuge areas. The fire, confined within the electrical ducts of three shops on the first floor, was exacerbated by combustible items such as wooden furniture and curtains.
“The fire originated from one of the air-conditioner ducts on the first floor, spreading to the other two shops. The entire mall faced visibility issues due to the engulfing smoke,” stated an MFB official. Out of the total individuals rescued, eight were from the first floor, and nine were stranded on the second floor. Initial reports suggested approximately 12 people were trapped inside, but upon investigation, the number was found to be nearly double. Ladders were employed for the rescue operation within the mall. The MFB announced that the entire building would be sealed, and an investigation would be conducted. Initial evidence points to the possibility of the fire being caused by a short circuit.
