A 17-year-old was arrested on Thursday for allegedly murdering Dr. Javed Akhtar, a 55-year-old doctor, inside his private nursing home in southeast Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area. The incident occurred the day before, when the minor, along with a teenage friend who is currently on the run, visited Nima Hospital for first-aid treatment. Dr. Akhtar, a practitioner of Unani medicine, was shot dead during the visit.

Reason Behind the Murder

According to sources, the accused claimed that he killed the doctor because he believed Dr. Akhtar had overcharged for the treatment. Following the murder, the teenager posted a picture of himself on social media with the caption, “Kar diya 2024 mein murder” (Finally committed murder in 2024).

Police Investigation and Evidence

The police have recovered the weapon used in the crime and are currently searching for the second teenager involved. Both boys lived in the same locality. Additionally, a female nurse and her husband are being questioned in connection with the case.

Details of the Incident

Hospital staff reported that the two boys arrived late Wednesday night, requesting treatment for an injured toe. One of the teenagers had been treated at the hospital the night before. After his dressing was done, the boys asked for a prescription and went to Dr. Akhtar’s cabin. Minutes later, the nursing staff, Gajala Parveen and Md Kamil, heard a gunshot and found the doctor bleeding from his head.

Context of Violence Against Doctors

This incident follows a shocking case in Kolkata less than two months ago, where a doctor on night duty was raped and murdered at a state-run hospital. That crime led to widespread protests across the country, with healthcare workers demanding better safety measures for medical staff on duty.
