A major train accident occurred in Tamil Nadu on Friday night when the Bagmati Express derailed after colliding with a stationary goods train at Kavarapettai. The incident led to the derailment of 12 coaches, but fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.

How the Accident Happened

The 12578 Bagmati Express was traveling from Mysuru to Darbhanga when it mistakenly entered a loop line instead of the mainline, crashing into a parked goods train. The train was moving at a speed of 75 km/h at the time of the crash.

Injuries and Rescue Operations

According to railway officials, 19 passengers were injured in the accident. Among them, 14 suffered major injuries and were taken to Stanley Hospital, while five had minor injuries. Rescue and relief teams quickly arrived at the scene, and over 95% of the passengers have been evacuated.

No Casualties Reported

Southern Railway confirmed that the train crew, including the loco pilot and staff, are safe. Although the impact caused a parcel van to catch fire, the blaze was swiftly extinguished by rescue teams. Efforts are ongoing to transport the stranded passengers to their destinations.

Train Services Affected

Following the accident, train services on the affected lines were halted. The Tiruchirappalli-Howrah Express, Ernakulam-Tatanagar Express, and Kakinada-Dhanbad Special Express have been delayed, with authorities working to divert the routes.

Investigation Launched

Railway officials are investigating the cause of the accident, which bears similarities to the tragic 2023 Balasore crash. The loop line error that caused the derailment will be closely examined to prevent future incidents.
