A college girl was allegedly raped inside her college in Cooch Behar on November 30. The alleged victim is said to be an undergrad student studying in her second year. On Friday, the student’s family lodged a written complaint against the accused Tapas Das at Tufanganj police station. The accused was arrested on Saturday.
The survivor, who is still in hospital, claimed Das gagged her to muffle her cries for help. She added that he panicked and fled when she started bleeding.
Ananta Kumar Burma, president of the management committee of Tufanganj College, said, “I am aware of the matter, and we are looking into it. I have come to know that the student is unwell. We will talk to the family of the student.”
Debashish Chattopadhyay, principal of Tufanganj College, visited the victim at the Sub-Divisional Hospital in Tufanganj. He said that the accused youth was not a student of Tufanganj College, he was an outsider. While admitting the security lapse, he demanded immediate punishment of the guilty.
According to Tufanganj police sources, an investigation has been started into the incident based on the family’s complaint. Family members and the general public are furious about how an outsider can enter a college and perpetrate such atrocities.
